What is Die-Cast Magnesium Alloy?

Die-cast magnesium alloy is a magnesium-based material primarily composed of magnesium, alloyed with elements such as aluminum, zinc, and rare earths, and formed through high-pressure die casting. This manufacturing process is typically executed using either hot-chamber or cold-chamber die casting methods.
With a density of only 1.74 g/cm³, it is approximately two-thirds the weight of aluminum. Due to its exceptional lightweight properties, this material is widely used in the automotive industry and represents a growing global trend in the selection of eco-friendly materials.

Advantages of Using Magnesium Alloy

Super Lightweight: Weighing 35% less than aluminum and 75% less than steel, high-strength magnesium alloy is the ultimate choice for EV range extension and aerospace weight reduction.

Absorbs Shock & Noise:Magnesium has a damping capacity 5-10 times higher than aluminum. It naturally absorbs shock and mechanical noise, making it ideal for powertrain components, robotic joints, and precision equipment housings.

Blocks EMI : It acts as a natural shield against electromagnetic interference. This is why magnesium alloy for electronics is the industry standard for laptops, smartphones, and EV battery enclosures.

Fast & Efficient Casting: Because it cools quickly, it cuts production cycle times by up to 50%. Plus, it easily forms ultra-thin walls, making precision magnesium casting highly cost-effective for mass production.

100% Recyclable: It is a highly sustainable choice. Remelting requires only 4% of the energy used for primary production, perfectly aligning with global ESG goals.

Disdvantages of Using Magnesium Alloy

Corrosion Risk: Bare magnesium can corrode in wet or salty environments. The Fix: We apply advanced magnesium surface treatment options, like powder coating or micro-arc oxidation (MAO), to ensure long-lasting durability.

Flammability During Machining: Fine magnesium dust or chips can catch fire. The Fix: Our facility uses strict safety protocols and specialized inert gas systems to keep the entire magnesium CNC machining process 100% safe.

Brittle at Room Temperature: Standard magnesium can be hard to bend or forge at room temperature. The Fix: That is exactly why we specialize in high-pressure die casting—it is the most reliable way to shape this lightweight metal perfectly.

Loses Strength in High Heat: Standard alloys like AZ91D can weaken above 120°C. The Fix: For demanding applications, we supply high-temperature magnesium alloys (like AE44 or AS41B) enriched with rare earth elements to maintain structural integrity.

Service Questions:

1. We are unfamiliar with casting services. How should we begin the process?

You can send us 2D or 3D drawings, or offer a picture of the product you want. We can provide Design for Manufacturing (DFM) services for you. Please contact mailto:custom@lexhardware.com for assistance.

We are highly flexible with order quantities. Our quotes always provide a tiered pricing breakdown based on MOQs. For example, the minimum order could start from just 100 pcs, depending on the size of the item, and larger quantities will unlock more competitive pricing.

We have implemented robust quality control measures to ensure consistency and reliability throughout the die casting process. Our Quality Management System is certified to ISO 9001:2015 and IATF 16949 standards, demonstrating our commitment to meeting the highest industry benchmarks. Our strict process includes thorough pre-production confirmation, multiple in-process quality inspections, and final photographic verification for customer approval. Additionally, we provide relevant material and industry certificates, and fully support third-party sample testing.

Product Questions:

1. Magnesium vs. Titanium: Which is Lighter?

Magnesium is significantly lighter. With a density of ~1.74 g/cm³, it is about 60% lighter than titanium (~4.5 g/cm³). For the exact same volume, a magnesium die-cast part will weigh less than half as much as a titanium part, making it the superior choice for extreme weight reduction in aerospace and automotive applications.

Generally, no. Bare magnesium is highly reactive and can corrode or leach metals when exposed to acidic or salty foods. While some niche products claim health benefits, they are not widely recommended by material scientists. For industrial safety, magnesium alloys are strictly used for structural components, not direct food contact.

Similar to cookware, bare magnesium is unsuitable for drinkware due to its high chemical reactivity with liquids. However, custom magnesium die casting is widely used to manufacture lightweight, durable, and EMI-shielding housings for smart water bottles, thermoses, and portable beverage equipment.

Currently, magnesium offers a massive cost advantage. Due to recent market shifts, the price ratio of magnesium to aluminum has dropped to historic lows. Combined with faster die-casting cycle times, magnesium auto parts can be up to 25% cheaper to produce than aluminum equivalents, driving the massive “magnesium replacing aluminum” trend in EV manufacturing.
